Dr. Nicolas (Nico) Matentzoglu, an invaluable semantic engineer in the Monarch team, is the recipient of the 2023 International Society for Biocuration (ISB) Excellence in Biocuration Advanced Career Award, which recognizes his important contributions to the field of biocuration.

The ISB is a professional society for biocurators, ontologists, developers and researchers that aims to promote the field of biocuration and provide opportunities for networking and collaboration. Awards are given annually to recognize outstanding contributions to the field.

Nico is a celebrated member of the Monarch team and the broader ontology and curation community. Nico’s role is critical to advancing many efforts in the Monarch Initiative. He leads the technical team for the Mondo Disease Ontology, led the creation of the Simple Standard for Sharing Ontological Mappings (SSSOM)) and led the reconciliation effort that brought together the phenotype ontology community to create a consensus-built Unified Phenotype Ontology. He is the ultimate team player and generously gives much of his time and energy to assisting team members and promoting community collaboration.

Nico will deliver a talk at the upcoming ISB Annual General Meeting on October 11, 2023 at 8am PT. For more information, please contact: isb@biocurator.org.
