Dr. Melissa Haendel and the TISLab join the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

We are pleased to announce that one of the Monarch multi-PIs, Dr. Melissa Heandel, PhD, FACMI, has accepted the position of Sarah Graham Kenan Distinguished Professor in the Department of Genetics within the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC-CH) School of Medicine. In addition to her primary appointment, she is also a professor in the Department of Pediatrics and the School of Data Science and Society. Dr. Haendel will serve as the Director of Precision Health & Translational Informatics and Deputy Director of Computational Science at NC TraCS, the hub of the UNC Clinical and Translational Science Award. Dr. Haendel is joined in this move by her lab, the Translational and Integrative Sciences Lab (TISLab), of over 25 members.

Dr. Haendel joins UNC-CH from the University of Colorado School of Medicine where she was Chief Research Informatics Officer, Marsico Endowed Chair in Data Science, and a Professor of Biomedical Informatics. She received a B.A. in Chemistry from Reed College and a PhD in Neuroscience from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Her postdoctoral work was done at the University of Oregon and Oregon State University.

Dr. Haendel is known for leading efforts with the Monarch Initiative including groundbreaking work with the Mondo Disease Ontology, Human Phenotype Ontology, the Monarch Knowledge Graph, and Phenopackets. She is also multi-PI on multiple other programs including the National COVID Cohort Collaborative (N3C), the Kids First Data Resource Center, the All of Us Center for Linkage and Acquisition of Data (CLAD), and the INCLUDE Data Coordinating Center.
